The summer climate and sunny weather offers perhaps the ultimate time to holiday in Porto. Tourists always flock to this part of Portugal at this time of the year, when summer highs in Porto average around 24°C / 75°F or 25°C / 77°F, rising much higher on the hottest of days, reaching more than 35°C / 95°F at times.

Despite this warm summer weather, the climate rarely feels uncomfortable and oppressive, due in no small part to the relatively low levels of humidity. The summer months in Porto are also extremely dry and rain is most unlikely during this high season.

Porto is situated on the northern side of the Mediterranean climate zone and weather is influenced by its prominent coastal position, with gentle ocean breezes often providing a refreshing breeze on the hottest of days. However, occasional forest fires can add a definite haze to the coastal views.

The climate in Porto is accurately described as being temperate, meaning that the summer weather is dry and warm, and that whilst the winter months may be wet, they are mild. In fact, even during January, the coldest month, the daytime temperatures average as high as 13°C / 55°F, meaning that Porto is not only a popular summer resort, but a great winter retreat.

The middle of September is when the main rainy weather arrives in Porto and these showers continue on and off all through the winter, with December being the wettest month, when precipitation levels average some 18 inches / 457 mm. Those visiting in winter to enjoy the mild climate would be advised to being an umbrella, although from February onwards, the rain is starting to become far more infrequent.
