Porto Museums and Porto Art Galleries

Whilst Porto may not be a major museum city, it does offer a particularly interesting selection of museums, along with a number of good art galleries. The Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis is one of the best galleries that Porto has to offer and is located within the Palácio das Carrancas, along the Rua Dom Manuel II, to the west of Cordoaria.

Here you can enjoy the city's most comprehensive collection of international art works, including everything from historical Neolithic carvings to contemporary pieces from the 20th century. Another good art gallery worth visiting in Porto is the Museum of Contemporary Art, which is known locally as the Museu de Arte Contemporânea and home to wealth of modern art, housed within vast whitewashed spaces.




Other interesting museums in Porto include the ever-popular Port Wine Museum, which enjoys a riverside setting and celebrates the city's extremely famous tipple, featuring a series of interactive exhibits. Also next to the River Douro is the Museu do Carro Eléctrico, where you will find an array of lovingly restored vintage trams and information about Porto's remaining tramlines.

The Museu do Carro Eléctrico is located within the former switching house, on the Alameda Basilio Teles, with admission including a free Andante Transport card, which can be charged up and used for tram rides, along with buses, the metro network and the funicular railway.
